The Rain

‘The Rain’

“Siblings emerge from the safety of their bunker six years after a rain-carried virus wipes out almost everyone in Scandinavia; they join a group of survivors and set out on a dangerous quest through the abandoned land, searching for signs of life.”

I have to admit I do love a good post apocalyptic drama and the fact that this is a Scandi drama makes me think it’s going to be even better.

The fact that it will be subtitled should not put you off – I learned this lesson from watching the epic drama ‘Dark‘.

THE SONGS

The song featured in the trailer is ‘Deliverance (Rain On Me)‘ by Erick Serena and The Killing Floor.

I was hoping for great things from this show and also some fantastic songs. I wasn’t disappointed on either counts and I binged watched all episodes in one day. I really hope there will be a second season!

Breaking Bad

‘Breaking Bad’

“Mild-mannered high school chemistry teacher Walter White thinks his life can’t get much worse. His salary barely makes ends meet, a situation not likely to improve once his pregnant wife gives birth, and their teenage son is battling cerebral palsy. But Walter is dumbstruck when he learns he has terminal cancer. Realizing that his illness probably will ruin his family financially, Walter makes a desperate bid to earn as much money as he can in the time he has left by turning an old RV into a meth lab on wheels

In a single moment, a good man, a man that stands up for his family because he loves them, a man that works honestly teaching the young because he cares, a man that is honest because he know’s it is right, that man can become the man that knocks at your door to kill you.

The man who knocks, is Walter White.

Breaking bad is a complex drama series that follows Walter White as he goes from high school chemistry teacher, to meth kingpin. Walter starts out the series as a good honest man that has a wife and a son. One day he collapses onto the ground of a car wash that he also works at, and he finds out from the doctors that has lung cancer. The news of his cancer sends him into a sort of provider mode, which makes him want to generate as much wealth for his family so they will be well set after he dies. Walter runs into a old student of his, Jesse Pinkman. Jesse is not what you would consider an upstanding citizen. Jesse is a meth cook. The amount of money that those in the meth business make truly intrigues Walter into partnering up with his old student, and thus their meth operation begins.

The only problem for Walter is that he has to keep this hush hush from his family, and his DEA agent brother-in-law. This show is truly phenomenal, the acting, the music, and the the overall story arch is brilliant. Each and every actor in this series gives it there all, and they really do put in the effort. Bryan Cranston playing Walter White gives the performance of a lifetime in this series and he will be remembered for it. Aaron Paul playing Jesse Pinkman plays such an amazing character that goes through deep trauma, mentally and physically throughout the series and Aaron Paul portrays his character in the best way that he can.

I believe that Jesse Pinkman will go down as Aaron Paul’s magnum opus. The music in this series completely captures and holds your attention.

Finally we have the overall story.

This is one of those stories that you see once in a lifetime. Every generation has a few shows that get remembered by latter generation’s. Breaking Bad is that story that will be passed on to the youth of the future and I don’t think they will want to miss it.

THE SONGS

The opening theme of the series is short and to the point which works well for Breaking Bad overall.

I would like to mention two songs in particular that stand out in this series.

The first is “If I Had A Heart” by Fever Ray.

The song is in Season 4 Episode 3 of the show, and it fits well with the emotions of what Jesse is going through, as he has to forgive himself for what he has done.

The second song is “Baby Blue” by Badfinger’s.

In the series finale, this song plays as the last shot is shown then as it transitions to the credits. When you watch the series you know that this is the best song to go out on.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’

“Rescued after 15 years in a cult, Kimmy Schmidt decides to reclaim her life by venturing to New York, where she experiences everyday life with wide-eyed enthusiasm. On a whim, she rents a room from Titus, a gay wannabe Broadway actor, who makes ends meet as a street performer in Times Square. The unlikely pair find they’re well-suited to help each other out, with Titus reintroducing Kimmy to modern life, and her providing him with the inspiration that you should never give up

Crazy, camp and cheesy is probably the best way to describe this show. If you like a big dose of nonsense then you will love it.

The fourth season will launch on Netflix May 30, but it’ll be the first time a season of the show will be split into two halves.

THE SONGS

Despite the fact that the theme tune is one of those songs that will stick in your mind all day there are a lot of great songs in the episodes.

Since Titus loves to perform there is a LOT of that which I love. The performance I enjoyed the most was his parody of Beyonce’s ‘Lemonade‘ – it’s fabulous!

I really don’t think there are any down-beat songs in here as it is just such a happy show so the music reflects that!

Santa Clarita Diet

‘Santa Clarita Diet’

“Joel and Sheila Hammond are everyday suburban real estate agents in Santa Clarita, California. The couple face a series of obstacles when Sheila has a medical transformation into a zombie and starts craving human flesh. With Joel and the family trying to help Sheila through the trying time, they have to deal with neighbors, cultural norms and getting to the bottom of a potentially mythological mystery.”

I always knew that I would get around to watching this show as I love Drew Barrymore, I love horror and I love comedy. Now that Season Two is about to be released I have finally started watching the show and what can I say – it’s everything I thought it would be.

It has just the perfect mixture of humour and gross-ness for me – oh and camp, it can be described as very camp! I’m not quite ready to delve into the realms of ‘Walking Dead‘ just yet so for me this is the next best thing.

I am currently trying my best to watch all of Season One before Season Two is released on 23rd March and I really recommend you to do the same.

THE SONGS

The song featured on one of the trailers for Season One is Cake’s cover of ‘I Will Survive‘ which I guess could be Sheila’s anthem in this show as she struggles to survive in this strange new situation she finds herself in.

There are a lot of ‘light’ songs as well as ‘heavy’ songs on this list which I think kind of reflects the humour and darkness in this show. Enjoy the songs that have been featured, enjoy the ones that I have added as I think they also fit the theme and as usual I will be adding more songs as they come up in the new episodes.

The Mist

‘The Mist’

“An unexplained mist slowly envelops the town of Bridgeville, Maine, creating an almost impenetrable barrier to visibility. The residents of the town soon learn the situation is even more precarious as hidden within the mist are numerous monsters of various sizes that attack and kill anything that moves, trapping several groups of people in a shopping mall, a church, and a hospital.”

I have always been a huge Stephen King fan so I was really excited to see how this would work as a TV show. I thought it worked really well and it took me only a few days to get through all the episodes.

I could really see this show developing even further after the first season as there was so many more questions that needed to answered and all the characters were really starting to develop.

Sadly, The Mist is not to be renewed for a second season and I for one am really gutted at that! Don’t let that put you off watching as I still recommend that you do. Once it is over do what I did and watch the movie or read the book.

THE SONGS

The first song to be played in episode one is ‘Happiness Is Not a Place‘ by The Wind and The Wave and this really sets the scene for the rest of the episodes in my opinion.

There’s a nice balance of up-tempo songs as well as some haunting ballads played during the episodes and I hope you like my other choices that I felt also fit in with the theme of the show.

When We First Met

‘When We First met’

“After spending a night with the girl of his dreams only to become just friends, a man gets the opportunity to travel through time and alter that night over and over again until he gets everything perfect.”

My love of time travel movies continues and I was excited when I saw this pop up on Netflix. I really liked Adam DeVine in ‘Modern Family‘ so I was sure I was going to enjoy this too.

I wasn’t disappointed! This is a fun watch and a great ‘feel good’ movie.

THE SONGS

There is a lot of jazz music featured in the film which has introduced me to a few cool new songs from the likes of Count Basie amongst others. However, my favourite song from the movie has to be ‘I Will Follow You‘ by RIVVRS.

The playlist is a real mixed bag of songs and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Timeless

‘Timeless’

“When a group with nefarious intentions attempts to change the world as we know it by altering the past, Lucy, a historian, Wyatt, a soldier, and Rufus, a scientist, unite to form an unlikely partnership, traveling through time to save history.

Watch on Netflix or buy on Amazon.

I’ve always loved anything to do with time travel so when I discovered this show I was optimistic that it would be another addition to my collection. It did not disappoint!

There’s a different story each week but there is an underlying story arc which just keeps you guessing and wanting more. A must watch for fans of time travel related stuff!

Season Two of Timeless is due in March and I for one, can’t wait!

THE SONGS

The song used on the trailers and promos for Timeless is ‘Eve Of Destruction‘ by J2 feat. Lola

Due to the nature of the show, the songs featured come from a range of decades so there really is something for everyone.

Between

‘BETWEEN’

“A small town called Pretty Lake and surrounding rural area under siege from a mysterious disease that has wiped out everybody aged 22 and older. The series also explores numerous themes: the power vacuum that results when the government quarantines a 10 square mile zone and leaves the inhabitants to fend for themselves; the desire of inhabitants to escape, ignoring that they will spread the deadly disease to the entire planet; and the effect of hormonal teenaged/young adult angst becoming the guiding force for an entire community.

I watched both seasons of this show over a weekend – I was hooked! I really liked the storyline in the fact that we really had no idea why what was happening was actually happening. I felt as if I was trapped with the characters.

I really hope there is a third season as I think there is a lot more this show has to offer.

If you are a fan of trapped/quarantine type shows with characters that you can really believe then this is for you!

THE SONGS

As the plot centres on young people in a dark situation where there is a fair amount of nastiness going on the songs are quite rock centric. One of my favourite ‘lighter’ songs featured is ‘Moves‘ by The New Pornographers.
